One Thing That Never Changes… Getting Rid of the Stumbling Blocks

Spread the Word!

What event in your life has brought with it the biggest change? Perhaps it was the day you got married. Perhaps it was a great adjustment to stop living only for yourself and to become concerned first and foremost with your spouse.

Maybe for you it was the day you took that new job or got that latest promotion, and your life has been going in a different direction ever since. Or maybe it was the day you had your first child and you knew that from that moment on things wouldn’t be the same.

Whatever that turning point in your life was, chances are you will never forget that moment when things became different. In the Bible, in the fourth chapter of the book of John, we find the story of a woman whose life was completely changed in an instant. This would be an experience she would never forget.

Strangely enough, we don’t even know this particular woman’s name. She is generally referred to simply as the woman at the well. On a hot day, a thirsty Jesus decided to go to the well and get a drink of water. While thirst may have been a factor, it surely wasn’t his only motivation for going. He knew this woman would be there.

After asking her to give him a drink of water, Jesus began to speak with this Samaritan woman, even though the customs of the day did not permit him to do so. He told this woman that he was the “living water”, and that if she came to him, she would thirst no more.

After a long discussion at the well, Jesus even revealed things about her life that she had tried so hard to keep a secret. “You are right when you say you have no husband,” Jesus told her in John 4:17. “The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband.”

Imagine this moment. What would you do? How would you feel if a stranger suddenly knew your life’s secrets? How would you respond? Instead of turning and walking away from Jesus, she went into Samaria, and found her friends and neighbors, saying, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did!” (John 4:29).

This one conversation with Jesus changed her life forever, but she didn’t let it stop there. She continued to spread the Word to all those around her. This is what true evangelism is – letting others know about the impact that Christ has had on your life.

Scripture tells us that “when the Son sets you free, you are free indeed” (John 8:36). Why not get out there and tell others about that great freedom!?!
