Just So Busy…
October 23rd, 2007
I realize that it’s been a while now since I’ve updated my blog. I wish I had some great excuse for why I haven’t had the time, but the truth is, I just got busy. I know that surely that’s never happened to you.
Since school has started back this year, one thing that’s kept me busy is the fact that I’ve been doing some substitute teaching. I’ve really enjoyed it so far and look forward to continue in this, but it has kept me busy.
I wish I could say that it was only substitute teaching that’s made me so busy, but the truth is, everything seems to all pile up at once. You know the feeling. Things at work conflict with things at home, and I have to run back and forth between church and meetings and events with my family. And I’m still single. It has to be an even more overwhelming feeling for those of you reading with spouses and children.
How does it happen? How is it that we only seem to get busier and busier as the year progresses? I always find myself saying things like “As soon as this month’s over, then things will slow down.†The truth is, they never do. Something else inevitably comes along that keeps me busier than before.
Could it be that we simply sign up for too much? Do we just have too many items on our plate because we should say “no†more often? For some of us that might be the case. But what about when it’s not? What do we do when we just stay so busy?
I want to give just one simple line of advice, which comes from God’s Word. The writer gives a mountain of advice when he speaks on behalf of the Lord in Psalm 46:10. “Be still, and know that I am God.†Be still, and know that I am God. What a wonderful thought. In all of the mess and turmoil around us, shouldn’t we just take a few minutes to actually be still and realize that God is in control?
Now some of you real busy beavers may have a problem with this. “Be still?!? Who has time to be still?†Doesn’t this just add something else to our schedules? Wouldn’t we be better off if we removed items from our agenda, instead of trying to squeeze in time to be still?
These are valid questions, but the truth is that God rewards those who take time for Him. Truly, that’s the case with everything we have. When we give our family to God, God will bless our families. In my own life, when I acknowledge that my money comes from God and give back to him, he always takes care of me financially.
The same is true with our time. No matter how busy things may get, it’s always a good idea to give our time and our schedules over to God. Just take time each day to be still, and to reflect on the fact that God is God, and is in control. Go ahead. See if he doesn’t bless you.
